History
Since the end of the 19th century Bremerhaven is characterized by the Fishery which hasn’t lost his importance to this day.
After the first world war Bremerhaven was one of the most important fishery ports and Seafish market place in Europe. The sale by auction of fresh fish has always been a high importance for the economy in Bremerhaven. To this day Bremerhaven is a gateway between fish supplier, ship owner, trading companies and the fish industry.
In the 80s declined the long time ongoing success of the fish auction. That caused heavy losses for small and middle sized companies in the fishery port of Bremerhaven. The fish industry received state-aid by an economic development sheme. In 1997 the FBG ( fishery port operating company ) restructured the fish auction.
The FBG and the Icelandic Trader Samuel Hreinsson founded the Bremerhavener Fischauktions GmbH. From this date the fish was offered to the customers by an electronic auction. Since 1998 the discharge of the ships, container and trucks is realised by the Bremerhavener Fischauktions GmbH. After same start-up and acceptance difficulties the new model satisfied all involved parties. This led to a continuously increase of fish amount and turn overs. Today the Bremerhavener Fischauktions GmbH is the most important fresh fish auction in Germany.
One reason for the successful restructuring were some significant investments. For example five container gates, computer-controlled grader, a big cold store and a lot of another renewals at Halle X south end. This investments improved the work conditions and were the key for a smoothly and efficient work flow with reduced labour costs.
